Here are photos of an SM-5 Stereo Zoom Microscope from the 1960's. It has 20x eyepieces, and a removable 1.5x objective lens. The zoom ring goes from 0.8x to 4x, giving the total magnification range as 16x-120x. The working distance, especially without the 1.5x lens, is very large, on the order of 6".
While the original lighting was not sophisticated, it turns out that a modern, cheap, LED ring light fits on there perfectly! It works really nicely for many applications of reflected light stereo microscopy.
